Bahrain Grand Prix officials have asked the FIA to reschedule the race that was meant to take place earlier this season rather than cancel it.
The race couldn’t take place after a series of violent clashed between anti-regime protestors and the country’s army earlier this year casued civil unrest, and the FIA had been considering cancelling the event before eyeing up options to move the season opening event at the end of the end of the calendar – a move that was opposed by some formula 1 teams.
The sports governing body will meet on June 3rd to decide Bahrain’s fate, and Bahrain International Circuit chairman Zayed Rashid Alzayani believes the country is now ready to host the race.
Things have calmed down tremendously in Bahrain. Life is back to normal. We are happy to have the race anytime really," he said ahead of the World Motorsport Council meeting in two days’ time.
"We went through a rough patch and we need nice moments in our history now for the nation."
"Formula 1 has always been a time where Bahrain showcases itself to the world not only as a sports arena but as society, a community that Bahrain as a nation has to offer. Formula 1 can bring back joy to the country." He added.
F1 ringleader Bernie Ecclestone has previously hinted the race could take place a week after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in Novemeber, and has also considered cancelling or moving back the inaugural Indian Grand Prix to December 11th in order to accommodate the cancelled event.
